Retirement / Důchod 1939 Konárovice u Kolína prematurely from Liberec - When Germans invaded Czechoslovakia, Vilem was retired from the position of "okresní hejtman" (top appointed civil servant in the county) in the Sudentenland located Liberec, that was taken over by the Germans in the first wave of Hitler's expansion. Vilém retreated to the nice villa in Konarovice that was built and used to belong to his mother KRSKOVÁ. He lived there throughout the war years to his death (1951) shortly after the Communist putch in 1948.
Death / Úmrtí 9 Březen 1951 Konárovice u Kolína massive brain stroke - Died waiting at a post-office with his wife Jarmila at his side.
He was burried in the family tomb in the main cemetery of Kolin.

My maternal-side grand-father (lawyer) JUDr VILÉM BAYER was an important "hejtman" - a government appointed top county official ("vládní rada", in retirement then v.r.v.v. = "vládní rada ve výslužbě"). With his career of this sort, their family moved periodically and this is how my mother was growing up in ROUDNICE nad Labem, PODĚBRADY, and also briefly in LIBEREC where the career of grand-pa Vilém ended up with the German take-over of the Sudetten territory of Czechoslovakia (1938). Vilém prematurely retired and eventually ended up living in the village of Konárovice (7 km west of Kolín nad Labem) in the vila (číslo popisné 6) that was built (1913-14) by his mother Marie KRSKOVÁ. I remember him as a lanky, tall man with a bristling short mustache, walking feebly with a cane. He wore thick glasses and his eyesight was failing due to glaucoma. He was quite short-tempered and as an avid nimrod (hunter), I heard him loudly swearing "prach-a-broky" in a funny way.

Grandpa (dědek) Vilém was a lanky, tall man walking with a cane. He wore strong glasses and suffered from cataract ("sedy zakal"). He had a mustache, chain-smoked and voraciously studied Czech history (Palacky).
He was of reasonable health and succumbed to a massive brain stroke sitting in a post office with his wife Jarmila, he just 'keeled over' - dead.
